How does it work?

Frequency regulation is carried out by controlling the production of electricity from different power plants. When the demand for electricity increases or decreases, the output of the power plants is automatically adjusted to maintain a constant frequency. This is done through an automated process called 'load balancing', where excess electricity is stored in batteries or other types of energy storage when there is low demand for electricity, and utilised when demand is high.

Frequency regulation is important to ensure the stable functioning of the electricity network and the availability and reliability of power supply to consumers.

For the electricity grid to function properly, it must maintain a frequency of 50Hz. To ensure this, Svenska Kraftnät procures about 1500MW of power for up- and down-regulation of the frequency in the electricity grid. Power reserves of 100kW and above can participate in the frequency regulation market. We not only offer the hardware to enter the market, but can solve the entire chain in a complete package with hardware, installation and commissioning, market access and bidding and payment. How profitable is it?

The arbitrage and regulation markets have been very profitable in 2022 as demand for regulation services has been high and we have seen large fluctuations in price.
